So, there is some news going around that Morgan the orca is deaf.
Morgan was rescued in the Wadeen sea out in The Netherlands back in July of 2010 by the Dolphinarium Harderwijk. She was very ill and very weak, so the Dolfinarium thought it would be best to take her in and care for her. She was at the Dolfinarium in a dolphin tank, which is not nearly enough room for a rapidly growing orca. She was fed well and got up to strength, and it was a plan from the beginning to rehabilitate her back out into the ocean, where she came from. Those plans were stopped, and Morgan was bought by Loro Parque and sent there November 29th, 2011 and remains there until this day. There was a lot of concerns about her being sent to Loro Parque concerning she is a young female orca, and none of the orcas at Loro Parque have any "parental guidance", if you will. When Morgan arrived, she was healthy and all the standards the Dolfinarium promised to do were accomplished. She was first introduced to Adan, the baby who had been rejected by his mother, Kohana, and then she was introduced to the youngest female, Skyla, then the dominant female, Kohana, and later the two males, Keto and Tekoa. Morgan seemed to be doin well until Kohana and Skyla began to rake her and taunt her continuously. This sparked up many concerns for her well being. But until this day, she still survives and is now beginning to learn new behaviors. She has learned a bow from my understanding, and a slide out. But those may just be rumors.
Anyways, today, I ran across the subject of Morgan may being deaf? It's very possible that she may be deaf due to her bad past in the Wadeen Sea.
It is said that Morgan doesn't usually respond to a whistle, but she responds to hand gestures, so this sparks the curiousity that she is deaf. But saying that she is deaf is just going to rise tension between anti-captive people and PETA, and their arguments will most likely state that Morgan is deaf because of the music that is continuously played, or that they mistreat her, or she doesn't get the proper medical care, et cetera.
I personally think that it is very likely that she is deaf due to her past, but it won't stop her from learning new behaviors and starring in shows.
