MarineLand France vs. Six Flags

So if you haven't heard yet, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is trying to send Shouka, their only female orca who is about 20 years old, to MarineLand Canada. MarineLand France (Antibes) still owns Shouka, and are trying to step in. Possible reasons that Six Flags is trying to send Shouka to MarineLand Ontario:

  • Shouka is alone. [She's previously lived with two dolphins, but she gets moody around them.]
  • Her tank is rather small.
  • APHIS has deemed Six Flags Discovery Kingdom unfit to care for killer whales.
But the question is, why MarineLand Canada, and not MarineLand France, which is where she was born?

Possible reasons could be that Kiska, a female killer whale who is about 35 years old, is also living alone, and they have three tanks at MarineLand Ontario. [The two front, and the one back.] However, Canada has less strict laws about captive orcas, and recently, SeaWorld has taken back Ikaika, a 9 year old male, because of MarineLand Canada's lack of treatment towards him. That must show something, because if SeaWorld, the multibillion company most known for having killer whales, doesn't want one of their orcas in MarineLand Ontario's care, then MarineLand should also be inspected on how they treat their orcas.

MarineLand Ontario doesn't have Kiska perform, and performing behaviors keeps the whales entertained while exercising. Without performing behaviors, Kiska is at risk of becoming overweight, and the only other way to prevent that would be by underfeeding her.

Either way, MarineLand Canada is not the right choice for Shouka to go to, because if they send her to MarineLand Ontario, and Kiska suddenly dies, it's very likely that MarineLand Canada will not want to give her back to her rightful owners. Therefore, it'd be causing Shouka to move twice, and flying can be very stressful for orcas.

Shouka was sent to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom from MarineLand France when she was about 10, because trainers feared that she would mate with her father. However, Shouka's father has died, and there's more orcas and space at MarineLand France. She's lived at both Six Flags and MarineLand France for about 10 years, so there's not a lot of doubt that she would remember the surroundings and maybe some of the orcas and trainers, especially if some of them still work at MarineLand Antibes. Either keeping her at Six Flags or sending her back home to France would be the correct move, in my opinon.
